My mother was born in 1917. In 1918 her oldest brother, who was 10 year old, died of influenza. He had disobeyed his mother and gone to visit friends where there was an influenza patient. His mother spanked him when he came home. He died a few days later. No one else in the family got sick. My grandmother carried the guilt of punishing him to her grave.
