Hot zone. Red zone. Raging. Blazing. Scorched earth.
These are all descriptors in use to describe the areas being overtaken by COVID and the unstoppable force of the rate of infection. We stand at 126,911 deaths this morning.
Likening it to a fire is sadly accurate. Like the infernos we are used to seeing rage unabated through the California hills, coronavirus is on the move, infecting or killing those in its path.
But WE didn't start the fire. At least not those of us who have paid attention from the beginning; those of us who may not be science savants but knew enough to take it seriously; those of us who understood that even the most minimum of precautions could make a difference.
Sadly, WE are not in charge of everything.
Three red led states - Texas, Arizona, and Florida - governed by Three Stooges names Abbott, Ducey, and DeSantis, are ablaze with COVID cases. They stalled in any meaningful response in the beginning, more concerned about currying and keeping favor with the Apricot Asshat than in protecting their citizens.
In Texas, Abbott's wrong hand man, Dan Patrick went on TV and literally said grandparents would be willing to die for the economy. Abbott, while closing things down as of March 20, dove headfirst into reopening with no data to back him up. As of May 1 he was reopening retail stores, restaurants, movie theaters, and malls. May 18 he flung open youth clubs, days cares, and massage/personal care facilities. May 22 - rodeos, bowling alleys, bars, and bingo halls. Zoos and water parks reopened May 29. And by May 31, youth sports and overnight camps were opened.
Oops.
Fast forward to this week - Texas is alight with COVID cases (over 10% of tests come back positive), hospitals are straining under the weight of positive cases, ICUs are at capacity, yet there Abbott was, still promising that Texans “don’t have to choose between jobs and health — we can have both.”
That was yesterday. Today he is now making a puffed-up-chest-big-deal about his decision to reclose bars and reduce restaurant capacity to 50%. He started the fire and now wants credit for calling the firemen.
In Florida, DeSantis refused to close beaches, allowing Spring Breakers and vacationers to run amok. He bragged that they had boats going up and down the shores encouraging people to social distance. And that was enough. And then, only when enough pressure from the public and enough scares taking place in cities in his state, did he relent and institute any safety directives. It was April 1 before he issued a stay-at-home order.
It wasn't long before he was pulling the trigger on Phase 1 of reopening May 4. Phase 2 followed June 5. Well, guess what, Ron? Your state just charted nearly 9,000 cases in ONE DAY - YESTERDAY. That brings your state's cases to 122,960. Was it worth it to see those roller coasters going? Your fellow idiot, Marco Rubio must think so. He is on the record downplaying it all, “95% of the people who test positive, who get infected are not going to die.” I see, ain't no big thang then? 5% is an acceptable death count to you? Your state is home to 4.4 million people, many of them older and more susceptible, Marco. But hey, that economy, right? Grandpa will happily choke on his own lung porridge so that little Johnny sees the stock market go up.
This was DeSantis a month ago. Vile, aggressive, stuffed with hubris and his own importance, and so sure it was all being blown out of proportion. Asshole.

And then there's my governor, Doug Ducey, who saw 30 of his peers around the country taking steps back in early March, but chose to belittle efforts to institute measures here in Arizona. He finally relented and while bars and restaurants were closed March 19 (only in counties that had confirmed cases, mind you), a stay-at-home order did not go into effect until March 31.
By May 8 retail was open, May 11 restaurants were open for dine-in, casinos were lighting up, and by May 15 the stay at home order was gone. And while there never has been an official green light for bars, they reopened anyway and were immediately packed. Just in time for some Memorial Day transacting of the virus. Pools reopened and people flocked. Social distance, wut?
We just added 3,348 new COVID cases today, over 3,000 new cases on five of the past eight days. As of Thursday, 86% of current inpatient beds and 88% of ICU beds were in use for COVID-19 patients. The Navajo Nation is suffering badly. He has ignored FOUR letters outlining concerns from Arizona AARP Director Dana Marie Kennedy. But instead of closing things back down or reinstituting the stay at home order, Governor Douchbag is just pleading with people to stay home, as if it is all out of his power. He is begging us to avail ourselves of a sense of community, after he has played divisional politics right down the line. In yesterday's press conference he avoided answering questions about his attendance at Trump's packed Dream City Church masturbation rally this past Tuesday. Oh, and he is now encouraging mask wearing.
All along, there have been no hard and fast masking requirements in these states. (Ducey actually forbid local ordinances for mask requirements until late last week.) If anything, they encouraged the politicizing notion that wearing a mask was stupid, unnecessary, something only weak libs did. And their MAGAty citizens followed suit, throwing tantrums when refused entry to stores with out one, making public spectacles out of not wearing them, spreading bullshit about hypoxia induced by them, accosting those who are wearing them, hiding behind God yet again, openly coughing on people as some sick joke. They loved to flaunt not wearing one to "own the libs".
Now, as their ignorant constituents are filling their hospitals, I have one thing to say to them all - I don't feel owned by you. Repulsed by you, yes. Angry at your arrogance, absolutely. Appalled that you are taking innocent people down with you? 100%
Sitting here at the keyboard, I just hit refresh. We have gone over 127,000 people dead - 127,118. 207 more headstones added. 207 more people who died alone in hospitals beds. 207 more times a doctor or nurse had to hold a Facetime screen up to the dead person's face so their relatives could say one last goodbye.
As I wrote yesterday, facts are facts. They simply do not care what your politics are, whether they make you chafe, if you agree with them or not. And the fact is this virus is scorching the earth as it moves faster and faster, pushed forward by the unmasked breath of this administration and the sycophants who only want the attention of the Coral COVIDiot in DC.
WE didn't start the fire, but we are all in danger of being burned alive.
