As a person transitions, there are far more steps on the journey than one may realize. It goes far beyond the obvious requirement of sustained therapy; requires more "Ts" be crossed than just Testosterone or estrogen therapy; and surpasses the salacious topics so many uneducated like to whisper about - like surgeries.
There is a red tape gauntlet that also must be run in order to transition - amending gender on items like birth certificates, passports, driver licenses. Name changes that have varying cornfield mazes to get lost in depending on the state. The steps require patience, paperwork, fingerprints, court appearances, in some places you must literally publish your new name in the paper for weeks before being granted a change, and facing numerous strangers who may not simply do their jobs but inject their personal opinions and biases.
Because of this, above anything else, all of the steps require courage.
With the election now behind us, and the frightening promises of this new administration to target LGBTQIA individuals, the clock is literally ticking on getting as many items changed as possible.
Here is your one stop shop for guidance.
There you will find a drop down menu to select your state, and links to all the legal information, steps, and documents you will need to proceed.
We have already amended Toby's gender on his passport. That was easy pickings compared to the Knight's errands upon which we now embark. First stop is the legal name change which will require finger printing, doctor's affidavits, paperwork, filing fees, and appearing in court where we will hope a judge will simply ask a few questions and sign the change.
Once that hurdle has been crossed, we face more paperwork, more fees, more requirements to amend his birth certificate, driver license, social security card.
AND WE WILL.
The clock is ticking. Wish us luck.
And we go...
