I remember stading in the middle of an empty 5th Avenue, looking south, watching a tower fall, and then seeing people later stumble past, some covered in ash, all dazed. Later walking with my sister across the 59th Street Bridge with thousands of other people trying to get home. And the silence. No one talking, people just putting one foot in front of the other. I will never forget it. The difference between who we were as a nation on 9/12/01 and 9/12/17 is tragic. In somw ways, although it took quite a while, I feel like maybe the terrorists won. Their goal was to divide us. It may have taken a while but it often feels like their mission was accomplished.

Made me weep.
